Igor Kolomoisky, a Ukrainian billionaire, gets detained in an anti-corruption effort

A prominent Ukrainian authoritarian who is suspected of fraud and money laundering will be detained for two months.

Igor Kolomoisky is charge with of using banks under his control to send $14 million ( £11.1 million ) abroad over the course of seven years. 

According to his attorneys  he won't post bond and will challenge the court's ruling in court.
It represents the most recent step in Ukraine's anti corruption campaign  which has already targeted a number of well known individuals.

On Saturday  Mr. Kolomoisky was captured on local television being brought out a Kyiv district court while wearing a blue FC Dnipro tracksuit jacket. His defense team claims that he is currently being detained at the SBU headquarters in Kyiv  the capital of Ukraine.

The agency stated in a statement   Ihor Kolomoisky legalized more than half a billion hryvnias ($14m) between 2013 and 2020 by withdrawing them abroad and using the infrastructure of banks under [his] control. 

President Volodymyr Zelensky appeared to make reference to the situation in his regular evening video address on Saturday  saying that  business as usual for those who plunderered Ukraine and put themselves above the law   would not be allowed to resume.

When he assumed office in 2019  Mr. Zelensky listed the fight against corruption as one of his top Goals.

Since Russia's invasion in February 2022  his administration has made a point of emphasizing Ukraine's efforts to combat corruption  which is regarded as one of the major requirements for accession to Western institutions like the European Union.

The court decision against Mr. Kolomoisky on Saturday is not the first action taken against him.
In February of this year  a raid on the tycoon's residence in the south-eastern city of Dnipro took place as part of a different investigation into theft and tax cheating at the two largest oil companies in the nation that he owns a stake in.

For alleged  significant corruption   while serving as governor of the larger Dnipropetrovsk region  the US imposed sanctions on him in 2021. He has declare he did nothing incorrect.

Rich businessman Mr. Kolomoisky is interested in Ukrainian media  energy  and banking. Before endorsing the former actor's presidential campaign  his TV network gave Mr. Zelensky his big break with the comedy series Servant of the People.

During the election campaign  Mr. Zelensky was accused of serving as Mr. Kolomoisky's puppet  especially by his competitor and former president Petro Poroshenko.

However  the president of Ukraine has refuted Mr. Kolomoisky's influence over the administration time and time again.
